The latest official data reveals that over 43,000 people were booked into immigration detention centers during the month of June, marking the highest monthly total since President Trump’s return to power. This increase responds to direct pressure from the White House on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with internal instructions to meet a goal of 2,000 daily arrests.
Most concerning for the community is that, although authorities claim to focus on criminals, the data shows that the detained population without a criminal record is experiencing the largest growth, with a 20% increase in just the first 11 days of July. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin defended these tactics last Friday, July 17, 2026, telling the press:
“I have turned down the temperature on the stove to try and get it right without boiling… I am turning down the temperature with you [the press], but we are turning up the heat on the streets. We are working harder than ever because we have empowered our law enforcement officers to do their job.”
