🎙️ In this new episode of the Alejandra Campos Podcast, he told us how he was deceived, and Dr. Alejandra explained what legal measures you can take in these situations.
The Devastating Reality of Labor Exploitation in Construction
The Alejandra Campos Podcast recently highlighted a heartbreaking reality for many immigrant contractors in the United States. In this powerful episode, small business owner Alex Zambrano sat down to share how a massive scam at a military base cost him his life savings and nearly his home.
Working Without Pay at Fort Carson
Alex, who runs a small painting company in the Colorado Springs area, was subcontracted to paint residential units at the Fort Carson military base. The contract was managed by Chauna Patterson of Alpha Painting and Marketing.
Relying on standard 30-day payment agreements, Alex trusted the process and fronted the costs for materials and his crew’s labor. After successfully painting between 25 and 30 units and passing all quality inspections, Alex realized the promised payments were never coming.
Intimidation and an $80,000 Loss
When Alex tried to physically visit the base to demand his rightful earnings, he was met with immediate threats. The contracting company warned that base security would be called and he would be falsely accused of harassment. This cruel manipulation and outright theft ultimately left Alex in massive debt, resulting in a staggering loss of approximately $80,000.
Legal Advice and Immigration Relief
Dr. Alejandra Campos explains that this deliberate non-payment is a severe form of illicit enrichment, a predatory tactic that often targets immigrant workers who may feel completely defenseless.
To prevent this from happening to others, Dr. Campos stresses the importance of always securing a fully signed contract and requesting a deposit before starting any job. Furthermore, she shared a crucial piece of hope: victims of extreme labor exploitation and extortion could potentially qualify for specific immigration relief, such as a T Visa or a U Visa.
