UNITED STATES – The Haitian community in the United States is on high alert. According to internal documents and federal sources, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has drafted plans to drastically intensify arrest and deportation operations targeting Haitian citizens. This measure responds to the imminent termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which would leave over 300,000 people without legal protection or work permits.
Ohio in the Authorities’ Crosshairs
Documents reveal that the state of Ohio will be one of the primary targets of this immigration offensive. Specifically, cities like Springfield, which hosts a large Haitian population, have been singled out for the execution of rapid repatriation flights to Haiti.
This focus comes after months in which political figures have spread claims, described as unfounded, about the community in that region. The operations, described as an “arrest offensive,” are expected to begin as early as this week.
DHS’s “Closing Time” Policy
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has adopted a firm stance, labeling TPS as a “de facto amnesty” program. Under a strategy internally dubbed “Closing Time,” the administration is pressuring beneficiaries to opt for “self-deportation.“
- Financial Incentive: The government is offering a $2,600 check and a free flight to those who decide to leave the country voluntarily before being arrested.
- Official Stance: The White House has called the end of TPS a “tremendous victory,” insisting that the status was never intended to be a pathway to permanent residency.
Humanitarian Crisis and Terror in Families
Human rights defenders warn that deportations to Haiti represent a deadly danger due to gang violence and extreme instability on the island, which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Currently, the State Department urges Americans not to travel to Haiti under any circumstances.
Guerline Jozef, director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, describes a climate of “trauma, fear, and extreme terror” in the neighborhoods.
“There are little girls who don’t even want to go to school for fear of returning home and not finding their mother,” Jozef recounted.
Legal Battle: The Due Process Clause
Despite the Supreme Court ruling that grants the government full authority to terminate TPS, defense attorneys have launched a new legal offensive. Current litigation focuses on the Fifth Amendment’s “Due Process Clause,” arguing that work permits and protection from removal are property and liberty interests that the government cannot arbitrarily withdraw.
So far, judges in cities like Boston and Chicago have managed to temporarily maintain protections for other countries (such as Myanmar and South Sudan) while these constitutional claims are evaluated, offering a glimmer of hope that similar measures could be replicated for Haitians.
